The
Ulster Way’ is close to the hearts
of most ramblers and walkers in the North of
Ireland. As most are aware many meetings are
being held and much effort is being applied to
preserve the Ulster Way in the best
form possible for the future. New markers, better
access and some rerouting is being planned.
UFRC
is represented on the Ulster Way Advisory
Committee. Our website will
periodically highlight interesting sections with
photographs.
A
long distance walk in Ulster was Wilfred Capper's dream for many years
. In the nineteen seventies the idea was promoted and the Sports
Council for Northern Ireland showed great interest in the mid
seventies . After a series of meetings, Wilfred Capper
(then retired) was asked to be Field Officer for a few months .
The few months became about fourteen years and much of the graft was
done by Wilfred . He walked the countryside , checked
routes , obtained access from farmers and created
publicity for the Ulster Way . Wilfred Capper continued walking until
almost 90 . He fell , broke his pelvis and required nursing care
. He died in 1998 at the age of 93
Information ,
photographs or articles would be most welcome from affiliated clubs
or members who probably know their own stretch of the Ulster Way
better than anyone .
