A meeting was held on 24th May,
1978 convened by Wilfred Capper (the father of the original Ulster
Way) to discuss the formation of a walking organisation to represent
the interests of recreational ramblers and hill walkers in Northern
Ireland. This organisation was intended to provide a voice for the
increasing number of people using the countryside with landowners,
the farming community and government . It would also provide a
common outlook when dealing with other sporting organisations and
news media . It was decided to call the organisation the Ulster
Federation of Rambling Clubs .
Mr. Wilfred Capper was
elected Chairman and our 2006 president Mr. Paddy McAteer was
appointed honorary secretary/treasurer. The business of the first
meeting (7th September 1978) discussed:
The loss of rights of way in
the Belfast area and North Antrim.
The new metric ordnance
survey maps -cost .99p-these replaced the old 1in. series .
Titled stationary was to be
purchased and consideration given to affiliation to the Ramblers
Association . |
