EMERGENCY FIRST AID (specifically for mountain activities)

This course has been organised and partly subsidised by the UFRC for members of its affiliated clubs. The course will be led by Stephen Synnott, Wilderness Medic with the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team.

  Sat.25th and Sun. 26th September 2010 (this is a 2 day course)

Time:  9.30am – 4.30pm

Venue:   Mary Peter’s Track,

                 Athletics House, Old Coach Road, Belfast. BT9 5PR

           The course will mainly be out of doors

Suitable for: adult ramblers/walkers who wish to learn how to deal effectively with  first aid emergencies should they arise in the hills/mountains

Course fee : £65.00 less UFRC discount of £15.00 (ie: fee payable : £50.00)

Aims:

                          Provide a worthwhile and enjoyable learning experience

                          Give an understanding of the workings of the body

                          Give you the knowledge to monitor and record body functions

                          Provide the skills to cope with accidents in a safe manner

                          Provide the skills necessary to preserve life and aid recovery

 

Skills covered:

                       Basic life support/tending the injured person

                       CPR – circulation, breathing, shock

                       Dealing with sprains, fractures, burns, eye injuries – applying

                       bandages and splints

                       Handling/moving a casualty in a remote environment

                       Coping in an emergency

                       Often scenario situations will be used. The emphasis will be on

                       “hands on” training

 

What to bring:

                     
Be suitably dressed for the out of doors (a change of clothes is a

                      good idea).

                      Packed lunch/hot drink

                      First aid kit, bivi or bothy bag, karrimat , hill walking boots  

                      Personal medication

                      Notebook and pencil

 

Assessment:
                 
 
                     This is a practical course with continuous assessment throughout.
                     
                    On
successful completion of the course the participant will receive a

                    certificate covering all requirements for the WGL and ML courses.

                    The certificate will be valid for 3 years from the date of the course.
